The Different Types of Lithium-Ion Batteries, Explained

Lithium-Ion Batteries: In 2021, there is no such thing as leaving the home without your mobile phone in tow. It’s unthinkable!

But were you aware that it is a humble lithium-ion battery that makes a mobile phone and many other portable devices possible? In the modern world, there are many types of lithium-ion batteries which allow us to carry out our daily routines.

So, how much do you actually know about lithium-ion batteries?

What Are Lithium-Ion Batteries?

In short, a lithium battery is a rechargeable battery. Everything from computers to electric cars runs on them.

They are also used in cordless power tools and are considered an eco-friendly option when compared to disposable batteries as they are also recyclable.

Types of Lithium-Ion Batteries

There are various types of lithium-ion batteries, which are used in different types of devices a lot of us use every day. We’ll look further into some of the different types below:

Lithium Cobalt Oxide

Speaking of laptops, the lithium cobalt oxide battery is the power source of choice for laptops and mobile phones. It has a low cost and offers a moderate performance.

It has a low specific power and is not suited for items that need longer lifespans.

Lithium Manganese Oxide

Used in medical devices and power tools, a lithium manganese battery offers you a moderate level of safety and power at a low cost.

Compared to other batteries, these communication batteries are safe and can utilize their energy more specifically.

Lithium Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide

Own an electric car? Chances are it runs on one of these batteries!

Its low cost, performance power, and high specific energy make it the battery of choice for electric motors in cars, lawnmowers, and electric bikes. It can also be easily optimized to increase its output!

Lithium Iron Phosphate

A battery of moderate performance power, the iron phosphate battery is what you need when you replace the battery in your campervan.

With its high level of safety, high lifespan, and low cost, this battery is the optimum choice for powering more complex vehicles which use more than a simple motor.

Lithium Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide

The performance, cost, and safety of a lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide battery (very wordy!) these communication batteries are often used to charge campervans.

It is also used in larger electronic appliances like power grids and electric cars.

Lithium Titanate

A more expensive battery compared to its counterparts, the lithium titanate is used in car radios and in certain medical equipment. They are also used in some very popular handheld tablets and mobile devices!

Considerations of Lithium Batteries

With the different types of lithium-ion batteries, it is important that the one you require has the battery capacity needed to power the required device.

Also, be sure to check the battery’s voltage, its safety for use, the temperature it can be stored at, and of course, its shelf life.
